I edited the /usr/sbin/pm-suspend script and before the script did anything, so right before the “# The rule here? Simplicity. I added,

umount /media/<SD Card Mount-point>

To find out the mount point (or path), just insert your SD card, find the pencil by the location bar in the file browser and copy the path it gives you.

So, I’m back from Tucson, and missed the internet. The event was really awesome; most organized of all the events I’ve ever been to. I started off, first day, really hurting my arm in my first doubles match against Utah State. Don’t know what is wrong, it just hurt really bad. So, after that, I got to play a total of three full matches: I lost in singles to UofA (6-3), my first match after hurting my arm. First serve gone, kind of a wimpy serve for the whole match. My slices really hurt to hit and he caught on quick. I lost in singles against UTEP (6-2) on the second day, but I was in total pain the entire time. We started early morning, had no time to really down some pills and stretch it out. After some pain relievers kicked in the second match, against ASU, was more promising. Although I did not have a good serve, I still was playing well otherwise. But again, the slices weren’t working as well, and the guy liked to come in alot. Also, lobs weren’t my (or my shoulders) forte, so he got lots of overheads to smash when I was on the defense. The match with ASU was still a good one, the shots I could hit were working well. We got last place, 11th.

But, the trip was still worth it. I had good friends to go with, which made it way more fun. The hotel was a nice stay, got to relax in the hot tub, etc.

It looks pretty good on a Dell Mini, if you hide the taskbar. Also, I had to extract the contents of the zip file to c:\Windows\Resources\Themes and double-click on the .msstyles file.

So, update one. School. I have been in school for some time, trying to find my niche. But, I have found I don’t quite have one, so I am going to get a degree that says so. I have applied to be a part of the College of Extended Learning, Bachelors of Individualized Studies program. The program simply allows me to construct my own degree, as most will find will contain concentrations in computer science, web, writing, graphic design, multi-media, mass media and even business.

The Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS) program is ideal for students with academic and career aspirations that require inter- or multi-disciplinary study. The program attracts motivated and self-directed students who feel constrained by the specialized nature of traditional degree programs and want to design their own, personalized plan of study. Other students, particularly those returning to the university after years away, or those with full-time jobs, choose the BIS degree because they have specific personal or job-related academic needs that can be met most efficiently through the BIS.

Universities across the nation are discovering that traditional degree programs sometimes do not address society’s interdisciplinary educational needs. NMSU has responded by creating a more flexible program in the form of the individualized studies degree. As far as I have researched, there isn’t a degree here on campus I can fit into; and this has been the problem all along. I’m sort of a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to technology and the web, and really there isn’t anything like that here. I also need to get out into the real world, I would like to start working and helping out where I can. So, this is a bit of news; it’s been a real relief actually. Light at the end of what has been a long tunnel.

Finishing up school for this semester has been a tough one. This has been the busiest semester to date. I’m not sure if I am built for two jobs, 14 credit hours and freelance work to top it off. I just think I am a little too laid back for all of that. Plus, most of the classes I took this semester do not apply towards the new degree I am getting, so there’s a bit of lack in motivation right there. But, a good grade will help my GPA. So, looking forward, I wonder just how I am going to push through the next year and a half. I have learned lots about time management and reducing stress so I can get things done. But I still will forget something here and there, and there always seems to be some kind of drama floating around. So, I guess I will need help from friends and even family to help in both those areas. I’m pretty thankful to have them too.

Religion, God & Life

One thing I do feel really good about is where I am spiritually. Now, I don’t mean that cloud inside my stomach, I just mean my perspective on life has become clearer and I have a focus. You can actually start reading about it at Trees and Bread, where I am starting to write about it.  The best thing about my focus, my connection with the world is that it has brought me back full circle to where I always started. I had abandoned my previous thoughts, beliefs, and approaches to try and find something else. But, my new perspective sounds new, but really it’s just how I have always felt about life, God, etc – just with new ways to focus on them. So, this is definitely a new chapter in my life, something much different than all the others; I’ve finally (I think) am starting to find what I was looking for. Not God, but answers. I finally have some answers, and a better way to express them.

I’ve been noticing a pattern, this is the 3rd paper planner I have purchased due to my frustration with web-services (though I love them so much). But, it just made me think, sometimes you just need a direct connection to something, quickly; and you need to be able to see the screen too! If I’m outside, there isn’t a chance I am going to be able to see what is on my screen anyhow. Sometimes, no matter how hard us computer nerds try, we just can’t stuff our lives on a computer… yet.

Download recorder-to-music.tar.gz and extract the contents to /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins, restart Rhythmbox and enable the plugin. Then, look for a record button!

Note, I did not write this, but I did make a minor change: It will create the audio files in your ~/Music folder instead of on the ~/Desktop where Rhythmbox is set to watch for your music. Now, when an internet connection is not around, you can listen to your favorite music from Last.fm!

Note, at the time of this blog I was using Ubuntu 9.04 on a Dell Mini 9.

But that’s not really what I’m excited about, although I have enjoyed working there so far :). The fun part of this job is going to be taking what I did for the College of Business and getting to re-vamp (I love that word) everything! When I began working for the College of Business I had plans to create a WordPress theme that would work great with WordPress, represent NMSU and it’s branding well, and serve to the college’s needs. Well, as time went on many of my plans to create such a theme were overthrown by the college’s desire to please administrative concerns (i.e. giving up common sense to eradicate administration’s fear of change) instead of concrete modern-day solutions. Multiply that with heavy time constraint and stressful deadlines and you have a site that isn’t quite how I pictured it. Though, it is pretty good :).

So, as I start to re-vamp the old College of Business Wordpress theme into what I am code-naming (just to be as nerdy as possible) “Accolade,” I hope to better reflect my original vision. I also hope this will become a theme anyone within the entire university can use. WordPress is such a powerful content management system. Especially compared to some of the from-scratch stuff I’ve seen come out of the university.

But, right away, Ubuntu was running fine, of course with some of the usual drop in experience from XP: slow video, slow Firefox, etc. Even thought I still feel bad for grandma and still have no hope of her enjoying the Linux experience, I found a few tweaks to help:

But, other than that, Ubuntu is still not quite running well enough to give it even a B+, you get a C+. As we speak last.fm in Rhythmbox is skipping once in a while! But, that’s not what this post is about.

This is about when you close your lid on your Dell Mini 9, nothing comes up when you open it up except a cursor. After thinking for just a few hours, I figured it out, if you have an SD card in the slot, and sleep it, you are going to keep getting that. So, now, you have to remove the SD card before suspending the computer! Annoying, still wondering why I let the Linux itch get to me (as Last.fm keeps skipping and typing is freaking out, writing this post).

Bah!

Fixed: I had recently tried installing Ubuntu UNR on the SD card and had not formatted it since. After formatting the card (FAT16), it sleeps! Check out http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=208980 on how to format your card.

Classes I’m taking:

• Object Oriented Programming (C Programming)
• Journalism 105 (Media in Society)
• Psychology in Sports

I know, not much CS in there, but when I signed up for classes I wasn’t sure if CS was going to be a good move, and I wanted to ease in. Next semester (and all remaining semesters) will be loaded with CS and Math!

Why journalism? Being a web designer I wanted to take classes that would help compliment web-design. They have web-design classes here, but they are geared more towards design, not programming, not web-applications, etc. So, the Journalism class will help compliment the  media/writing aspect.

Why astronomy classes? Well, basically, because I can’t manage to pass biology! I mean it, I have tried super-duper hard to pass that class and it just wasn’t happening for me and astronomy is the next class in line for my science requirements. Plus, I am very interested in astronomy! The worst part of the classes is sitting around and noticing how chill all the Astronomy teachers are, maybe I should be an astronomer?

But, so far, I have no complaints, it’s been fun and familiar…

I was shocked to notice I was feeling a lot like all those freshman that moved in yesterday, and I’m 25! And then, there’s the people who just seem to have it all together, they know what they want, everyone supports them, they have the means, dreams, no one’s in their way… I kind-of have lost that feeling, and here I am blatting it out to the public!

But, I start class on Thursday, not sure how I am going to enjoy Computer Science, but I guess I will never know until I find out. I… just… used to be so excited for the semesters to start, and it’s just not there anymore, I’m all burnt out on asperation.

This is from Postsecret, and I just kinda connected to this one. I used to be, sort-of, an “atheist”. But, I used to catch myself praying, and because of that, I found there was still something to God. I couldn’t be an atheist if I wasn’t absolutly sure, and all along, I wasn’t…

Keeper of the Kohn, a must watch when all the people around you seem to be pulling you down. Great pick-me-up, great story, great reminder life is good…

I took this to heart, it hit me deep. I have these things in my life I always remember changing my life, quotes, advice, self-revelation, etc; this is no exception. I guess, if you can learn to look at even the most negative of things, even other people saying bad things about you, and look at them as a gift they are offering, you can choose whether to accept it, and deal with it, or not.

Just some good advice I was given, worth spreading.

2. How do you like your steak? … Happy; I am in a personal debate, right now I am sticking with eating meat, but I wish I didn’t. And so, I always hope the cow I am eating, or whatever, was at least happy to some degree.

I did the same, though I didn’t get it back then, but I loved trying to figure out what we were ’supposed’ to be doing. I remember when I figured it out, how grown up I felt. I was 13, I’ll never forget.

You Know, I feel I have been under-estimated on some things. I can manage to do what I want, when I want, the way I want. I plunder, yet with the honor of any decent man. I drink and am never caught off guard! I’ll take on the sea and come home ship-wrecked, treasure-less, and even woman-less, but I still got a swaggle in my step! So, just plain stop estimating me, you can’t, and let a pirate drink his rum and coke!

Yeah, generally, Ubuntu UNR just was too slow. It would take a miricle to browse through bookmarks in Firefox, watch Flash content or use my webcam. I do miss a few features, but I need to get things done!

Just a little bit easier, a little more my way, a lot more love and understanding with a pinch more of time for a nap in a hammock with you…

Sometimes I wish I were having more fun, sometimes I wish it was all a little bit easier. Endurance has always been a great quality of mine, but it never came invited.

In Hagerman, which has about 1000 people in it, you can just sit back on the porch and take a nap. That’s the kind of life I wish I could bring back with me to Las Cruces where even during the summer it’s nuts! The best part was just having all the different members of my family: Ashley, Aiden, Misty (Robin’s wife),  Mom, Robin (my brother) and even my aunt Judy came around a couple days.

A visit to the farm was a much needed element of the trip. For some reason a visit to the farm seems to be a place where I can release all my negative energy, let is dissapate and remind me there’s still a place where things are simple…

Side Note: Never again will I upgrade Wordpress when it tells me too, gallery is not working unless I copy and paste a code from a previous post. Right now (Wordpress 2.8) wordpress inserts a gallery link=”file” shortcode and it doesn’t work. But, if you add orderby=”" it works?

How does one decide? I need to master this somehow, find one way of doing something and sticking with it! I am always looking for the latest and newest way to do things, but there’s always a catch, or something not working. I look back and see myself, and I laugh, because I have been into so many different things and obsessed with them – and yet I haven’t really got anything done!

There is just so much to do, I can’t decide what to do. Sometimes I wish I were a little more ignorant, just so I would be forced to use the simple stuff, or be too scared to try something new.

Note: I just had a thought walking over to get coffee: “Why are you so worried about how you get things done? You’re going to die soon, quit wasting your time!” – What a strange thought, that death could help give me a little peace of mind. What if we never died, can you imagine how much time we’d be wasting trying to organize!

That thought is always a little calming and gives me a boost to just get things done for others; to serve – isn’t it what we’re here for!?

I really like these neat videos about life, I think it’s interesting how life works. Kind of reminds me how clueless I am, but how freakin’ cool it is too.

Summer sucks right now, I will be honest. I am bored, there is tons of work to do, I’m stressed out. Everytime I gripe I always remember there are some good things too. I guess today has just been really boring. I haven’t even left the apartment, there was tons I could have done today, but I only did a handful of each of them.

It’s getting dark, and I have just been here with #1, thinking – and when I’m alone I think the most. I kind of like having something to do, thinking isn’t nessesarily the most fun thing to do, especially when you don’t know what to think!

But, on the other hand I started writing a song! Not a musician or anything, but I can play a guitar, so with all this time I got a song started. Maybe I will post the lyrics and someone can sing it for me.

The White Pinto still will not start, I think the battery is dead – although I have no idea what would have drained it. I am going to try starting it again…

So, I recorded a <thing> about changing my major this morning, and I found a flaw to recording your posts, can’t edit…

I started off my recording this morning on a kind-of positive spin, but by now I have lost my umpfh about it. About what? Me changing my major to computer science. I’ve been thinking about college, my life, what I want to do, what I can do, etc and it just makes more sense. I have been a psychology major for a year now, and I love it, but it also means more school and the last week or so it’s been hitting me hard.

I’m on the sunset side of 30, and I know I am good at this computer thing, I’ve been doing it since, what, eight? I don’t mind doing it all that much, in fact I quite like it, but I just always wanted to do something more important. I’m also not rich, I am incurring debt and I pay for school on my own, in the long run, I could spend 2 years in CS or 5-6 pursuing psychology, the math is simple.

For now, it just seems more logical. Maybe later I can get back into psychology. But, even though I am a little bland about it, really it felt nice this morning to know I had set a goal. I hope this decision, later on, doesn’t bite me in the ass. I have lots to look forward to, and I don’t want much, so maybe I can turn all this time I’ve been waisting into something good.

And, today, I got rained on! Enjoy…

Good news, I dried off…

Anyways, this weekend was a blast. I haven’t had an entertaining weekend in a while! I hung out with friends, went to a birthday party, watched and played way too much tennis (I’m sunburned). But, it was just what I needed to start off the summer, usually they start off with really nothing.

But work, man, I do have a lot of work ahead of me, and since this weekend went so well, I am not in rhythm – but I will get back to it, the beautiful thing about work is that once I get started (coding, etc) I just keep going and it makes the day fly by pretty fast.

I woke up today thinking, again, about where I am going in my life. I know, I think about it a lot. But, over the last few days I’ve really discovered (re) how different I am, and that although I love that I do thing and believe things differently, I am also always fighting the feeling of fitting in. But, that was a random thought, just something on my mind this morning…

I also start a new job this summer, doing website stuff of course, so that’s new. Here at NMSU also, so no problems I forshadow happening. I’m really looking forward to the time I will get to spend with Ashley. She’s out doing her thing of course, but we’ve set some time to do some fun things, and I just hope we get to do them and they aren’t … stressful at all.

Performance

The UNR has substantially increased the performance of my netbook, from hard drive space to video performance (which was  a nag in Ubuntu Desktop). If you are considering switching, do it, just for the performance benefits!

Netbook Remix Launcher, etc.

Right away I liked the new Netbook remix launcher, panels and applets. But, they didn’t work! I enabled effects in Apperance and right away it freaked out, I disabled and it was gone! Also, Maximus is the worst, it doesn’t even maxamize window right.

So, after a couple of days I used desktop-switcher to switch to the normal desktop and am quite happy. I even used Synaptic to remove the Netbook Remix so it wouldn’t taunt me play with it. It just isn’t complete, save yourself some trouble and switch back to the normal desktop.

Installation & Update Manager

After installation Update Manager suggested updates,  I did what grandma would do and hit update. I noticed it hanged on post-installation trigger doc base, specifically “Registering documents with scrollkeeper” and had to use CTRL-C to escape the hang.

I did this twice, the first time I thought I might have a bad image, the second time, I still had to use CTRL-C, but let it patiently hang and resolve after that (I didn’t use CTRL-C again).

I don’t know what the deal was, but this was my only glitch in installing Ubuntu UNR (9.04). Otherwise, the performance has been improved and I can watch YouTube video’s normally again.

I expect (if anyone is really reading this) that this is on most people’s minds. But, I used to think I knew what I wanted, then I reached →this← point in my life, and realized I don’t actually know. I know some things I want to be, but they are like big day dreams in my head summarized by a single shot of me giving a TED speech one day, writing a book, discovering something profound about God and religion; but I have never really thought about it until now.

So, here I am, 25, doing really bad in college and I don’t quite know what to do anymore. I guess it’s not the “what do I do” part that has caused a dissonant tone inside, but the “you never really knew to begin with” thought that really stumps me. I have never really planned to do anything, just wishful thoughts of a number of things, which probably explains why I haven’t accomplished anything yet.

One of my greatest fears is to live my life never having accomplished anything great, because I know I’m capable of it and it’s in my heart to do it. I know I still have “plenty of time,” but I just always thought I’d be on my way by now. I feel like I’m becoming a pro at starting over.

Man, I feel like I was talking like this just last semester. I feel like I am learning school all over again for some reason, I took a semester off, then another one and thought to myself, “I should get back before I get in that slump everyone talks about.”

Curse that slump! I know I keep saying I am going to do better the next semester, but I may have identified the problem: I keep thinking, any second now, I am going to get this close and I won’t be able to finish or the world will kick my ass for succeeding. I also have the erry feeling that school is going to let me down, and I think I have been trying to avoid finding out…

But, hopefully, there’s new hope… I am going to try and focus on today more, the week; not fifty years down the line like I do all the time.

But! On an awesome note, I got to go see Kenny Chesney last weekend!

How do I want to help?

• Psychology: listen, solve, comfort.
• Religion: peace, impact “evil” in a one-solution kind of way.
• Make us “fools” again: encourage gnosis, but discourage the knowledge of right and wrong.

And then, I stared thinking about my website and then I started thinking, “how many times have I stared a website, just to delete it months later?” Then, that got me thinking about Genuinity, a term I like to hold close to my own personality and I started realizing something: I haven’t been being very genuine lately.

That got me thinking about my happiness lately, my insecurities, and my hope for the world. I need to get back into that, and maybe this post is the start of that, whatever it is!

I wrote something really cool on my status update today:

Genuinity embraces truth, whether it be known or not; it just treats truth like it exists.

Kind of a summary on what I’m talking about… I’m going to start off by being more genuine, and seeing where it takes me. I’ve been hiding a lot, maybe I can help by showing more…
